Food production begins with seed. Having good quality seed, and the knowledge to plant, care for, and harvest, is essential for all people to thrive. Providing seed, and the education necessary to grow food, is the starting point for all food production systems.
Seed Programs Canada works closely with Seed Programs International, and together we can offer a range of seed and services to help people in need, to provide an opportunity to become self-sufficient, for the benefit of their families and their communities.
What we can provide:

Seed:
Seed Programs International partners with many seed companies in North America, Europe, and Asia, who donate high quality seed for international relief efforts. Some varieties are certified organic, some are hybrid, and some are conventionally bred varieties. We pride ourselves in being able to provide varieties that are adaptable and well suited to the target area. Recipients have reported that 90% of the varieties provided are well suited to the climate, soil, and cultural requirements.
Germination and purity are checked routinely. Our seed is stored in an inspected warehouse and packaged for international use by charitable organizations. We offer full documentation, such as phytosanitary certificates, as needed for the importing country.

Seed Assessment:
NGO's may lack the information needed to determine their needs. Using the tools at www.seedsystem.org will help determine which varieties would be best suited for a particular area. We also have technical support staff who can help with the selection and quantities of seed. In recent years we have helped about 21,000 recipient individuals per annum and approximately 3500 home and commercial gardens were planted.
In addition to providing information about seed, we can provide support for NGO's and other charitable groups, to educate their staff about seed and seed varieties.

Training:
We embrace a "train-the-trainer" approach to educating communities about the selection, planting, and harvesting of vegetable and field crops. NGO's in the target area are usually best equipped to work with individuals and communities. The resources within Seed Programs International, and Seed Programs Canada, can help others determine their needs, select the best available seed varieties, and provide the best advice for a bountiful harvest.

Local Seed Sourcing:
Solutions for food production systems often require sourcing seed in the target area. Perhaps the seed is unaffordable or it is unavailable for various reasons. In situations where local seed offers the best opportunity for success, we fund-raise and work with partners to provide local solutions suitable for the target area.
